ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT PATERNITY TESTING

1) How much does a Paternity test cost?

Cost depends on whether the test is for LEGAL purposes or just for PERSONAL use. DNA Dimensions has the best prices in metro Detroit. Only DNA Dimensions provides professional service for LESS than the cost of a do-it-youself kit. Please contact DNA Dimensions for current pricing information.

2) What is the difference between Legal and Personal?

Legal tests must follow a Chain of Custody procedure that requires a lot of documentation and the appointment takes twice as long, but the accuracy of the test is the same. If there is any chance a Legal test result would ever be needed in the future, it is advised to have the Legal test done since the Personal test could not be used and a new Legal test would be needed - costing more for a second test.

3) How accurate is the test?

For INCLUSION (where the results say the alleged father probably is the father), the results typically exclude more than 99.99% of the rest of the population. For EXCLUSION, (where the results say the alleged father is not the father), the results will say the man in the test is absolutely not the father (the man is 100% excluded or there's 0% probability of his being the father).

4) What is involved in the test? Is blood drawn?

A simple cheek swab is performed. No blood is drawn. It is quick and painless.

5) Is the mother required to be in the test?

No, a Paternity test can be done without the mother but if it is a Legal test, it is advised to include the mother since some courts might require it.

6) What if somebody (father, mother, etc.) is not available?

Another relative might be available or a DNA sample might be obtained another way (from objects such as cigarettes, razors, toothbrushes, etc.).

7) Can I use the Personal test results for a legal situation?

No, Personal test results will not be good enough for anything other than personal use. If there is any chance a Legal test result would ever be needed in the future, it is advised to have the Legal test done since the Personal test could not be used and a new Legal test would be needed - costing more for a second test.

8) Where are you located?

DNA Dimensions has offices in Detroit, Dearborn, Wyandotte, Livonia, Troy, Southfield, St. Clair Shores, Mount Clemens, and other locations. (Click here .)

9) What are your hours or do I need an appointment?

DNA Dimensions provides personalized customer service by appointment only. Please call or email us to schedule your private appointment. Appointment times are usually available within one or two days and at a convenient office location. Saturday appointments are available in Southfield. For a small additional fee, customers can have appointments at locations that are not DNA Dimensions offices.

10) Can you come to my hospital room?

Yes, for a small additional fee, customers can have appointments at locations that are not DNA Dimensions offices.

11) How long do results take?

For Paternity tests, results are generally available in 3 business days - if the customer has fully paid for the test. The results are made available only if the account is fully paid.

12) What are your payment plans?

All tests can be started for a low down payment. Before their test is initiated, customers can make installment payments. Customers can also make installment payments after their test is initiated. Once the balance is fully paid, results will be provided.

13) Can I have a Paternity test before my baby is born?

A Paternity test can be done before the baby is born but this requires an amniocentesis procedure which is risky so doctors will not perform one unless it is necessary for a medical reason. If an amniocentesis is to be done, DNA Dimensions can provide a kit that includes special packaging and a small vial for a sample of the amniotic fluid to be sent to the lab.

14) What do I need to bring to the test?

For Legal tests, the adults must have a government issued photo id, such as a Drivers License. Parents or legal guardians must bring birth certificates for any minors in the test.

Ancestry DNA Test

Over thousands of years, our ancestors migrated from Africa to other parts of the world. And as the groups branched out, their DNA evolved to have signature features. Your genetic code contains these signature features which reveal your ancestral heritage. You'll discover what percentage of your DNA that can be traced to each of the following ancestry origins:

- Native American: Populations that migrated from Asia to inhabit North, South and Central America.

- European: European, Middle Eastern and South Asian populations from the Indian subcontinent, including India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

- East Asian: Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian, Koreans, Southeast Asians and Pacific Islanders, including populations native to the Philippines.

ABUSECHECK HAIR ALCOHOL ABUSE TEST

The Hair Alcohol Abuse Test is a non-invasive testing procedure which provides a definitive timeline of alcohol abuse. It has been used by law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, and employers to identify individuals with recent histories of alcohol abuse. The test is unique in that alcohol is normally only ingested and does not come in any other form (i.e. gas) that would cause ambiguities or false positive results.

Who Uses This Test:

Healthcare Professionals: Prove your patient does not have an alcohol dependency or identify people with an alcohol addiction (i.e. mandatory for liver and kidney transplants). Measure the efficacy of an alcohol treatment program.

Legal Community: Prove your client is fit to have custody of his/her children or prove the opposing party is unfit to have custody of his/her children. For post-accident testing, prove or disprove your client or the opposing party has a history of alcohol abuse. Prove or disprove that a person has met restrictions of his/her probation.

Forensic Use: Since ethanol is the most frequently encountered drug in postmortem forensic toxicology laboratories, this test may provide insight into an individual's history of alcohol consumption which may be relevant to a case (or to prove that a driver in a road accident was not in the habit of overindulging in alcohol).

Public Sectors: Many public organizations and sectors examining the physiological and behavioral effects of alcohol can utilize this test to aid in their research (i.e. studies between the correlation of alcohol habits and risk of vehicular accidents).

Human Resource: Certain high profile or public safety jobs may require abstinence from alcohol for certain periods when performing a task and this test can minimize risk by determining any drinking issues of a candidate or employee.

Parents of Teenagers: Parents test their teens to be certain that they are not abusing alcohol.

HAIR DRUG ABUSE TEST

The Hair Drug Abuse Test is a non-invasive testing procedure which provides a definitive timeline of drug abuse. It has been used by law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, and employers to identify individuals with recent histories of drug abuse.

Hair testing is the most convenient and effective way to measure historical use of drugs in an individual. When drugs are consumed by an individual, some of the drug molecules or byproducts of drug metabolism are incorporated into the structure of the hair. Mass spectrometry can identity the 5 most commonly abused drugs:

  amphetamines (amphetamine /methamphetamine & ecstasy)
  cocaine metabolites (cocaine, and benzoylecgonine)
  marijuana metabolites
  opiates (codeine, morphine, and 6-mam)
  phencyclidine (PCP)

Who Uses This Test:

Healthcare Professionals: Prove your patient does not have a drug dependency. Measure the efficacy of a drug treatment program.

Legal Community: Prove your client is fit to have custody of his/her children or prove the opposing party is unfit to have custody of his/her children. For post-accident testing, prove or disprove your client or the opposing party has a history of drug abuse. Prove or disprove that a person has met restrictions of his/her probation.

Human Resource: High profile or public safety jobs may require abstinence from drugs and this test can minimize risk. Liability, productivity, and health issues surrounding drug abuse in the workplace are important concerns for employers.

Rehab Centers: Measure the effectiveness of your program.

Parents of Teenagers: Parents test their teens to be certain that they are not abusing drugs.

  DNA Test for Twins

DNA Test for Twins

Twin siblings can be either identical or fraternal twins. For medical purposes, or just simply out of curiosity, you may want to know if a set of twins have identical DNA. DNA Dimensions' Twin Zygosity test looks at specific genetic markers to determine the nature of the relationship between twins -- either fraternal or identical.

Identical Twins

When one egg is fertilized by one sperm cell and then divides and separates, two identical cells will result. These cells will then develop into identical twins. The DNA profiles for identical twins will be identical. Additionally, the physical attributes of identical twins will seem similar for traits such as hair color, hair texture, eye color, height, and weight. They must also be of the same sex.

Fraternal Twins

When two eggs are independently fertilized by two different sperm cells, fraternal twins result. The DNA profiles for fraternal twins will not be identical, and they are just like full siblings who are born at different times. Furthermore, if the two sperm cells originated from 2 different men then the twins would be like 2 half-siblings. Additionally, the physical attributes of fraternal twins may not seem similar for traits such as hair color, hair texture, eye color, height, and weight. They also may not be of the same sex.

The Twin Zygosity DNA Test is used to establish DNA profiles for the twins being tested. If the profiles are different, then the twins are fraternal, and if the profiles are identical then a probability of being identical twins is calculated.

Aunt / Uncle DNA Test

Sometimes the most unique relationships in a family exist between Aunts and Uncles and Nieces and Nephews. That's why DNA Dimensions offers Aunt/Uncle DNA testing. The test can be administered between an alleged aunt or uncle, and an alleged niece or nephew.

Sometimes the parent is not available. Or suppose your father dies, and you know he had a brother or sister. Our test can determine whether a person is, in fact, your father's brother or sister. That information can offer a wonderful sense of connection to the deceased, and can become a new relationship to cherish.

The Aunt/Uncle DNA test, also known as Avuncular Testing, measures the probabilities that a participant is either aunt or uncle to another participant. The probabilities can be increased greatly if other known relatives, such as a parent of the niece or nephew, are available for testing. Results may vary between 1% and 99% accuracy.

ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE: ARE YOU AT RISK?

Alzheimer's disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.

Alzheimer's can strike people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.

More than 40 million Americans have a relative with Alzheimer's disease and 1 in 8 people will develop Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer's destroys brain cells and eventually results in loss of body functions.

Alzheimer's Risk:

Alzheimer's disease runs in families but everyone has some risk of developing late onset Alzheimer's. The lifetime risk for the general population is 10-15%. This means that approximately 15 out of 100 people will develop this condition by age 85. Factors that may alter this risk include: Age. The risk for Alzheimer's increases with age. Most people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease are 65 years old or older. Family History. Those who have family members with Alzheimer's disease are more likely to develop this condition than those without a family history. Gender. Women are at greater risk to develop Alzheimer's disease than men. Genetics. The presence of a specific form of the APOE gene, APOE ε4, increases one's lifetime risk of getting late onset Alzheimer's disease. Inheriting the APOE E2 form decreases one's lifetime risk. Ethnicity. Different groups have different risks to develop Alzheimer's disease.

Know Your Risk and Learn Your Options

DNA Dimensions offers a confidential genetic test and expert guidance to provide you with valuable information so you can make the best decisions for your health, your family, and your future. You should consider testing for Alzheimer's disease genetic risk if... You have a family history of Alzheimer's You are concerned about your risk of developing Alzheimer's Finding out you have a lower risk of Alzheimer's will provide peace of mind. A comprehensive assessment that includes genetic testing with expert interpretation from a board certified genetic counselor can help you understand your risk in the proper context and provide you with information so you can control your future.

Genetic Testing: For Your Health

"Although there is no way to change one's APOE-ε4 status [the high risk form of the APOE gene], lifestyle modifications may help reduce the potential effects of having APOE-ε4. These lifestyle modifications include eating a heart-healthy diet, exercising and staying mentally active." -- Alzheimer's Association, April 2008 There are changes you can make right now that promote a healthy brain and may help lower the risk for Alzheimer's. These include: Lowering cholesterol and homocysteine levels Lowering high blood pressure levels Controlling diabetes Exercising regularly Engaging in social and intellectually stimulating activities Your test results report is a guide to help you partner with your physician to implement appropriate lifestyle changes. High risk individuals may want to consider screening to detect early symptoms of the disease. Because there are medical treatments available that slow the progression of Alzheimer's, early detection of symptoms plus early treatment equals better health outcomes and more good years.

Genetic Testing: For Your Family

Alzheimer's is a disease that impacts the entire family. Knowing your risk can provide valuable information to have informed discussions with your family. Reassure your family about your personal risk of Alzheimer's disease Develop an Alzheimer's Readiness Plan with your family

Genetic Testing: For Your Financial Future

"My father's Alzheimer's care exhausted his savings. I want to know my risk so I can make informed decisions for my retirement and future healthcare." -George P,San Jose, CA A recent survey found that Americans do not plan for the possibility of developing Alzheimer's. Key findings: 80% think it is important to plan ahead for the possibility of getting Alzheimer's 83% have taken NO steps to prepare for the possibility of Alzheimer's 58% have NOT designated anyone to take care of their affairs if they were to get Alzheimer's disease ']]>

Learn Your Genetic Risk
In your personalized report, conditions will be ranked according to your estimated lifetime risk. Your risks will be qualified as high, medium or low. For high risk conditions, you should take action, such as (1) consulting with your doctor, (2) requesting early and/or more frequent screening, (3) making necessary lifestyle adjustments to mitigate all risk factors, and (4) even financial planning.

Consult Your Doctor
Due to the complexity of DNA testing and the important implications of the test results, you may want to consult your doctor or a genetic counselor before having the test. The genetic predisposition report is provided to you for informational and educational purposes. It does not replace a visit to a doctor, nor does it replace the advice or services of a doctor. You should review your results with your physician.
